TLDR
Press the seal. If it does not spring back, it is not sealing, regardless of how intact it looks. That is the failure mode owners consistently miss.
To test an RV slide seal, press it firmly with a thumb. A functioning seal compresses and springs back. A hardened seal holds its shape and does not recover, which means it is no longer sealing even though it appears undamaged.
The Test
- Extend the slide fully.
- Press each seal firmly with a thumb along its length, particularly at the top and the corners.
- Watch what happens when you release. A working seal springs back immediately.
- A seal that stays compressed, or that feels hard rather than springy, has failed.
- Repeat at several points, because seals fail unevenly and the top usually goes first.
Why This Failure Mode Is Missed
Owners look for cracking, splitting, or visible damage. Those do happen, but they are not the common failure. The common failure is the rubber losing its ability to compress, which happens because UV exposure hardens it over time.
A hardened seal looks completely fine. It is in one piece, it is the right shape, and it is sitting exactly where it should. It is also doing nothing at all, because sealing depends on the seal deforming against the wall and springing back to maintain contact. Once it stops doing that, water goes past it.
In coastal conditions this happens faster than the five to eight year service life most owners assume. Constant sun on an extended slide accelerates it considerably, and a coach that spends summers with the slides out ages its seals much faster than one that does not.
Why It Matters More Than It Sounds
A slide is a hole cut into a structural sidewall. Water entering there does not run down an interior wall where you would see it. It goes directly into the floor structure at the point where the vehicle is already weakest, and it spreads laterally under the flooring.
By the time there is a visible stain on the slide floor, metering routinely finds saturation extending several feet beyond it. The seal replacement is then the smallest line on the job.

Extending Seal Life
- Clean and treat seals with a UV protectant two or three times a year. This genuinely works and takes twenty minutes.
- Retract slides when the vehicle is stored for extended periods rather than leaving them out.
- Do the press test at every seal treatment, so you catch hardening before intrusion.
- Never force a slide that is binding. That damages the seal and frequently the mechanism.
- Have the floor metered if you ever see staining, rather than drying it and assuming it is resolved.
