Repair Decision Comparisons

TLDR

Four decisions that determine the cost of everything downstream. Roof material and shop type are the two owners get wrong most.

The key RV repair comparisons are repair versus replacement thresholds, body shop versus dealer versus specialist, roof membrane material choice, and paint versus wrap for branding and colour change.

Specialist vs Body Shop vs Dealer

CapabilityRV specialistAutomotive body shopRV dealer service

The pattern is consistent: a body shop is excellent at the half of the job it can do, a dealer is excellent at the other half, and a job needing both spends weeks in transit between them.

Roof Membrane Materials

MaterialTypical lifeCostBest for
EPDM rubber10 to 15 yearsLowestBudget replacement, chalks as it ages
TPO15 to 20 yearsModerateMost owners, best balance of cost and durability
Fiberglass20 plus yearsHighestCoaches that shipped with it, best appearance
Aluminum20 plus yearsHighAirstream and traditional aluminum construction
Whatever the material, penetration sealant is what actually fails. A twenty year membrane over unmaintained sealant leaks in year three.

Repair vs Replace Thresholds

  • Roof: Repair while the membrane is intact and only sealant has failed. Replace once cracking spreads across the field or decking has softened.
  • Fiberglass panel: Repair below roughly a third of the panel. Replace above that, or where it has already been repaired twice.
  • Slide seals: Always replace rather than treat. A hardened seal that no longer compresses cannot be restored.
  • Generator: Rebuild below the compression and hours threshold. Replace above it, where a new unit costs less across five years.
  • Absorption refrigerator: Repair the LP side, the board, or the igniter. Replace when the cooling unit itself has failed, and consider a 12V compressor unit at that point.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which roof material should I choose?

TPO for most owners on cost and durability. Fiberglass where the coach originally had it and you want to keep the appearance. Whichever you pick, the sealant maintenance matters more than the material.

Is a wrap cheaper than paint for a fleet?

Upfront yes, over ten years usually not. Wrap wins where you need reversibility or frequent rebranding, paint wins on longevity and on complex surfaces.

How do I decide repair or replace on a panel?

Extent and history. Past about a third of the panel, or after two previous repairs, replacement is usually cheaper across the next five years.
